Autonomous Multicamera Tracking on Embedded Smart Cameras

    Get PDF
There is currently a strong trend towards the deployment of advanced computer vision methods on embedded systems. This deployment is very challenging since embedded platforms often provide limited resources such as computing performance, memory, and power. In this paper we present a multicamera tracking method on distributed, embedded smart cameras. Smart cameras combine video sensing, processing, and communication on a single embedded device which is equipped with a multiprocessor computation and communication infrastructure. Our multicamera tracking approach focuses on a fully decentralized handover procedure between adjacent cameras. The basic idea is to initiate a single tracking instance in the multicamera system for each object of interest. The tracker follows the supervised object over the camera network, migrating to the camera which observes the object. Thus, no central coordination is required resulting in an autonomous and scalable tracking approach. We have fully implemented this novel multicamera tracking approach on our embedded smart cameras. Tracking is achieved by the well-known CamShift algorithm; the handover procedure is realized using a mobile agent system available on the smart camera network. Our approach has been successfully evaluated on tracking persons at our campus

Monitoring of metabolic parameters of mammal cells cultures in microfluidic devices using integrated optical chemical sensors

Optical chemical sensors are well established in the chemical industry, life science, biotechnology and research laboratories. They are operate non-invasive, do not need any reference elements and can be read-out via contactless measurement. Moreover, it is possible to miniaturize and integrate them into microfluidic systems. Due to their simple composition, optical sensors can be produced at low price and therefore represent a good alternative compared to electrochemical sensors for their application in disposable microfluidics. The various possibilities of integrated optical oxygen sensors have already shown their potential in different microfluidic applications [1]. However, monitoring of further metabolic parameters is important for a better understanding of biological processes. Therefore, our group develops, next to oxygen sensors, also optical sensors for monitoring pH, glucose, CO2, ammonia and various ions. Still, integration in a Lab-on-a-chip format is a challenging task due to the state-of-the-art performances in terms of signal brightness, response times, optoelectronic read-out systems, fabrication and integration. Chloride-induced corrosion of steel in concrete -- insights from bimodal neutron and X-ray microtomography combined with ex-situ microscopy

The steel-concrete interface (SCI) is known to play a major role in corrosion of steel in concrete, but a fundamental understanding is still lacking. One reason is that concrete's opacity complicates the study of internal processes. Here, we report on the application of bimodal X-ray and neutron microtomography as in-situ imaging techniques to elucidate the mechanism of steel corrosion in concrete. The study demonstrates that the segmentation of the specimen components of relevance - steel, cementitious matrix, aggregates, voids, corrosion products - obtained through bimodal X-ray and neutron imaging is more reliable than that based on the results of each of the two techniques separately. Further, we suggest the combination of tomographic in-situ imaging with ex-situ SEM analysis of targeted sections, selected on the basis of the segmented tomograms. These in-situ and ex-situ characterization techniques were applied to study localized corrosion in a very early stage, on reinforced concrete cores retrieved from a concrete bridge. A number of interesting observations were made. First, the acquired images revealed the formation of several corrosion sites close to each other. Second, the morphology of the corrosion pits was relatively shallow. Finally, only about half of the total 31 corrosion initiation spots were in close proximity to interfacial macroscopic air voids, and above 90 percent of the more than 160 interfacial macroscopic air voids were free from corrosion. The findings have implications for the mechanistic understanding of corrosion of steel in concrete and suggest that multimodal in-situ imaging is a valuable technique for further related studies

RESERVATION MODEL FOR REAL-TIME BIDDING BASED ADVERTISING SYSTEM

    Get PDF
An advertisement management system can enable an advertiser to switch between realtime bidding and reservation delivery modes. A request is received to transition a campaign from a real-time bidding mode to a reservation mode. A reservation engine determines proposed terms for a reservation contract. An acceptance of the proposed terms is received from the advertiser. The campaign is transitioned from the real-time bidding mode to the reservation mode and a reservation contract is established between the advertisement management system and the advertiser, with campaign parameters made immutable for the duration of the contract

A versatile optode system for oxygen, carbon dioxide, and pH measurements in seawater with integrated battery and logger

Herein, we present a small and versatile optode system with integrated battery and logger for monitoring of O-2, pH, and pCO(2) in seawater. Three sensing materials designed for seawater measurements are optimized with respect to dynamic measurement range and long-term stability. The spectral properties of the sensing materials were tailored to be compatible with a commercially available laboratory oxygen logger that was fitted into a pressure housing. Interchangeable sensor caps with appropriate "sensing chemistry" are conveniently attached to the end of the optical fiber. This approach allows using the same instrument for multiple analytes, which offers great flexibility and minimizes hardware costs. Applications of the new optode system were demonstrated by recording depth profiles for the three parameters during a research cruise in the Baltic Sea and by measuring surface water transects of pH. The optode was furthermore used to monitor the concentration of dissolved oxygen in a seagrass meadow in the Limfjord, Denmark, and sensor packages consisting of pO(2), pH, and pCO(2) were deployed in the harbors of Kiel, Germany, and Southampton, England, for 6 d. The measurements revealed that the system can resolve typical patterns in seawater chemistry related to spatial heterogeneities as well as temporal changes caused by biological and tidal activity

Adoptive transfer of allergen-expressing B cells prevents IgE-mediated allergy

IntroductionProphylactic strategies to prevent the development of allergies by establishing tolerance remain an unmet medical need. We previously reported that the transfer of autologous hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) expressing the major timothy grass pollen allergen, Phl p 5, on their cell surface induced allergen-specific tolerance in mice. In this study, we investigated the ability of allergen-expressing immune cells (dendritic cells, CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells, and CD19+ B cells) to induce allergen-specific tolerance in naive mice and identified CD19+ B cells as promising candidates for allergen-specific cell therapy.MethodsFor this purpose, CD19+ B cells were isolated from Phl p 5-transgenic BALB/c mice and transferred to naive BALB/c mice, pre-treated with a short course of rapamycin and an anti-CD40L antibody. Subsequently, the mice were subcutaneously sensitized three times at 4-week intervals to Phl p 5 and Bet v 1 as an unrelated control allergen. Allergen-expressing cells were followed in the blood to monitor molecular chimerism, and sera were analyzed for Phl p 5- and Bet v 1-specific IgE and IgG1 levels by RBL assay and ELISA, respectively. In vivo allergen-induced lung inflammation was measured by whole-body plethysmography, and mast cell degranulation was determined by skin testing.ResultsThe transfer of purified Phl p 5-expressing CD19+ B cells to naive BALB/c mice induced B cell chimerism for up to three months and prevented the development of Phl p 5-specific IgE and IgG1 antibody responses for a follow-up period of 26 weeks. Since Bet v 1 but not Phl p 5-specific antibodies were detected, the induction of tolerance was specific for Phl p 5. Whole-body plethysmography revealed preserved lung function in CD19+ B cell-treated mice in contrast to sensitized mice, and there was no Phl p 5-induced mast cell degranulation in treated mice.DiscussionThus, we demonstrated that the transfer of Phl p 5-expressing CD19+ B cells induces allergen-specific tolerance in a mouse model of grass pollen allergy. This approach could be further translated into a prophylactic regimen for the prevention of IgE-mediated allergy in humans

Improving Sensor Interoperability between Contactless and Contact-Based Fingerprints Using Pose Correction and Unwarping

    No full text
Current fingerprint identification systems face significant challenges in achieving interoperability between contact-based and contactless fingerprint sensors. In contrast to existing literature, we propose a novel approach that can combine pose correction with further enhancement operations. It uses deep learning models to steer the correction of the viewing angle, therefore enhancing the matching features of contactless fingerprints. The proposed approach was tested on real data of 78 participants (37,162 contactless fingerprints) acquired by national police officers using both contact-based and contactless sensors. The study found that the effectiveness of pose correction and unwarping varied significantly based on the individual characteristics of each fingerprint. However, when the various extension methods were combined on a finger-wise basis, an average decrease of 36.9% in equal error rates (EERs) was observed. Additionally, the combined impact of pose correction and bidirectional unwarping led to an average increase of 3.72% in NFIQ 2 scores across all fingers, coupled with a 6.4% decrease in EERs relative to the baseline. The addition of deep learning techniques presents a promising approach for achieving high-quality fingerprint acquisition using contactless sensors, enhancing recognition accuracy in various domains
